Jody Wong’s letter (“Awaiting an Apology,” Aug. 26) is hard to fathom. Many in China demand a “proper” apology from Japan over atrocities committed by the Japanese military during World War II. But have the Chinese apologized to the Tibetans? Or to the Uyghurs? Or to the Vietnamese? And has the Chinese government ever “properly” apologized to the Chinese people for the insanity of the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, or the Tiananmen Massacre?

Wong should know that the Japanese government has acknowledged its past wrongdoings—something the Chinese government has never done to its victims. To paraphrase Wong, a civilized nation such as China should apologize for its mistakes, no matter what.

ジョディ・ウォン氏の貴誌への手紙（「謝罪を待ち望む」8月26日）は理解しがたいものである。中国では、第二次世界大戦中の日本軍の残虐行為について、日本に対して「きちんとした」謝罪を求める人が多い。しかし、中国はチベット人に謝罪したのだろうか？あるいはウイグル人に？あるいはベトナム人に？大躍進運動、文化大革命、天安門事件の狂気について、中国政府は中国国民に「きちんと」謝罪したことがあるのだろうか。

ウオン氏は知らないかもしれないが、日本政府は過去の過ちを認めている。一方、中国政府は一度も中国人の手で行われた残忍な加害行為に対し被害者に謝罪したことがない。ウオン氏が御指摘されたように、日本と同様に中国のような文明国は、何があっても過去の過ちに対しては謝罪すべきだ。
