In his Feb.7 article, "The Nanjing number game," Gregory Clark gets all worked up and writes, "If I were a Chinese I would be very angry. Probably even angrier than Iris Chang."
It is quite puzzling that Clark should be so preoccupied with Japanese rightwing loonies who don't quite have a grasp on history and who suffer from amnesia. He should be aware that a large number of educated Japanese who are not of the lunatic fringe know better and are aware of the burdens of history.
If Clark is in such a crusading mood for justice, perhaps he should also point his guns at the mainstream elements of British and American society, which to this day have never apologized for past unparalleled acts of savage butchery done to the natives of Australia, Africa, and America, as well as for the enslavement of whole countries and peoples around the world.
Perhaps, since these events happened so long ago, it is possible that Clark has forgotten about such past barbaric acts of Anglo-Saxon imperialism done in the name of gold, God, and the glory of Western civilization.

２月７日の記事「南京の数字ゲーム」で、学者・評論家のGregory Clark氏は興奮気味に「もし私が中国人なら、とても怒るだろう、おそらく著者アイリス・チャングよりもっと怒っているだろう」と書いている。
クラーク氏が、歴史をよく理解せず、記憶喪失に陥っている日本の右翼の狂信派に振り回されるのは、非常に不可解なことである。極端で狂信的な見解を持たない多くの教養ある日本人は、過去の歴史を知っているし、歴史の重荷を自覚していることをクラーク氏は認識すべきだろう。
もし、クラークがそんなに日本の狂信的な右翼に対し歴史観の「正義」を求める為の聖戦をしたいのなら、英米社会の大半の人々にも自らの怒りの矛先を向けるべきだろう。彼らは、オーストラリア、アフリカ、アメリカの先住民に行った未曽有な虐殺行為や、世界中の国や民族を奴隷にしたことについて、今日に至るまで謝罪していない。
おそらく、これらの出来事はあまりにも昔のことなので、クラーク氏は、金と神と西洋文明の栄光の名の下に行われたアングロサクソン帝国主義の過去の野蛮な行為を忘れてしまったのだろう。
