The Japanese government said it was considering billing the freed Japanese hostages in Iraq for some of the expenses accrued as a result of getting them rescued.
What a contrast to the response of the U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who commended the freed Japanese hostages for risking their lives for the greater good.
There is no doubt that the hostages had ignored government warnings and had been told to leave Iraq. Yet Powell’s comment vs. the Japanese government response to the hostages’ activities shows the utter insularity and small-mindedness of Japanese who are more concerned about not creating a disturbance to society and bothering other people than risking life to save other people.

日本政府は、イラクで解放された日本人人質を救出した結果、発生した費用の一部を元人質に請求することを検討していると発表した。
解放された日本人人質がより大きな人道益のために命をかけたことを称賛したコリン・パウエル米国務長官の反応とは、なんと対照的なことだろう。
人質が政府の警告を無視し、イラクから脱出するように言われていたことは間違いない。しかし、パウエル氏のコメントと人質の活動に対する日本政府の対応とを比較すると、命をかけて他人を救うことよりも、社会に迷惑をかけないこと、他人に迷惑をかけないことを重視する日本人の偏狭さ、心の狭さが全く際立っている。
