Ever since Japan was forcibly opened up by the US and European powers in l853, after 250 years of self-imposed isolation, the Japanese preoccupation with catching up with the advanced economies of the world has imbued the country with an emphasis in education in the sciences and mathematics. Rationalism and logic have been the cornerstones of Japanese education, and superstition and "irrational beliefs" thrown out the window.
Today Japan prides itself today as being at the forefront of advanced science and technology. Asked if they believe in the existence of ghosts or other un-worldly spirits, most Japanese claim not to believe in ghosts or to seek the word of those ubiquitous soothsayers who all the same do a good trade in modern Japan.
